Burney Lions honors three Students of the Month

On Thursday, November 17 the Burney Lions presented awards to three Student of the month from Burney Senior/Junior High School.

Megan Arsenau, who was unable to be present last month because she was competing in a soccer game, was named Senior Student of the Month for September. Billy Covert was named Senior Student of the Month for November, and Kaitlyn Estes was named 8th grade Student of the Month for November.

Each student received a certificate and a check from the Lions to reward them for their achievement. Eight grade students of the month are awarded $50 and Senior Students of the Month receive $100.

The students were introduced by BHS Vice Principal Becky Torgrimson. Lion George Whitfield presented the awards for the Lions.

September Senior Student of the Month Megan Arsenau is a 4.0 grade point student who enjoys science and math. Amongst her many school and community activities, she is active in the California Scholarship Federation, Leadership, S-Club, mentoring, and Burney 4H. She will be performing in the Spring Musical this year. Megan is an excellent athlete competing in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is also the morning “Voice of the Raiders” who makes announcement each morning at the school.

Megan plans to go to either UC Davis or Boise State next year after she graduates. She would like to pursue a career in business and/or healthcare and eventually would like to start a family. She would also like to travel to South America.

Her parents Jenny and Chad Arsenau came watch her receive her award.

November Senior Student of the Month Billy Covert is the son of Billy and Shiloh Covert. He has a 3.857 GPA. He is active in the California Scholarship Federation, the Leos, Interact, CNL, Marketing, and Leadership Clubs. and will be performing at the spring musical. He works as a waiter at Anna’s Country Kitchen and enjoys volunteering in the community. He also is on the radio every Wednesday night for Raider Radio on KKRN 88.7.

Billy likes to travel and would like to see a live Broadway musical. He plans to go to either the University of North Texas or the University of Texas Dallas.

Kaitlyn Estes, the eighth grade student of the month also has a 4.0 GPA. Her parents Jason Estes and Loni Kolek and several of her brothers and sisters came to watch her receive her award. Kailyn is the secretary of her class. She is active in Club Live and plays volleyball and softball. She is in 4H and has raised sheep. She likes to read and tease her little brother. One day, she hopes to go skydiving. She would like to go to college and possibly become a doctor.

Guests were served a delicious meatloaf dinner prepared by Lion Larry Hawthorne with the help of several fellow Lions, and the dinner was served by members of the Leos Club.
