Meeting of mothers of military members at Burney Mountain Guest Ranch April 22

A message from Burney Mountain Guest Ranch:

On April 22, at 10:00 a.m., there will be a meeting of mothers of military members to get acquainted at Burney Mountain Guest Ranch, 22800 Guest Ranch Road in Cassel.

The agenda is to meet together for support and encouragement. Light refreshments will be provided.

Burney High School Interact Club installs new officers

The newly chartered Interact Club of Burney High School had an Inaugural Ceremony and Dinner at Burney High School on Sunday March 26 to install their new officers.

The officers included: President- Paige Smith; Vice-President – Megan Arsenau; Secretary- Madison Luntey: Treasurer- Billy Covert; Student Council Representative- Chris Phipps; and Social Media Correspondent- Makayla Henderson.

Interact is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age (12-18) that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and promotes international understanding and peace. The name “Interact” was created by combining the words “international” and “action.”

Interact clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs as a program of Rotary International. Rotary clubs provide guidance and inspiration, but the Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting. The BHS Interact Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Burney-Fall River.

Bob Jehn, past president of the Burney-Fall River Rotary Club, emceed the event. Several other past presidents of Rotary were also present for the inauguration as were  representatives of the Fall River High School Interact Club.

Melissa Madden and Kevin Bower will serve as advisors from Burney High School and Willie Rodriguez and Trish Mostaufi will serve as advisors from the Rotary Club.

Principal Ray Guerrero gave the keynote address describing the work and mission of Interact.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least one community service project and at least one project that furthers international understanding and goodwill.

Since the establishment of the first club in Melbourne, Florida in 1962, Interact has grown to more than 33,000 clubs with more than 300,000 members in 200 countries.

The BHS club has 33 charter members. Each new member that was present received a certificate and a lapel pin. The advisors were also introduced and presented with a lapel pin.

After the introductions and presentations, Paige Smith, President of the BHS Interact Club ended the program with closing remarks.

Smith said, “As president of our Interact Club, I am excited to see what opportunities our club has. I am very thankful for how supportive the Rotary Club has been. As a club, we could not be more thrilled about our future endeavors.”

Caltrans District 2 Workers Memorial, Tuesday, May 2, in Burney

On Tuesday May 2, Caltrans District 2 will hold a memorial  for fallen workers at the Caltrans Burney Maintenance Station at 37334 Main Street in Burney. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The memorial will honor the men and women who have lost their lives building, maintaining and operating California roads and highways.

The public is invited to attend.

Kindergarten Registration at Burney Elementary School

Press release from Burney Elementary:

Burney Elementary School invites all parents of children planning to attend Kindergarten for the first time in the fall to their registration day on Friday, April 7th in the school multi-use room. It will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Children who will be five on or before September 1 are eligible to enroll this year. The registration meeting will be an excellent opportunity for parents to meet the staff members who will be working with their children, to ask questions, and to receive information about the Kindergarten program.

There will also be the opportunity to sign up for the transitional-kindergarten program available for children who will be turning five from September 2nd to December 2nd.

During registration, parents will make an appointment for the child’s screening day and be informed about the visitation day.

Parents are urged to bring their child’s birth certificate and immunization record to registration day.  A child will not be registered unless a birth certificate and proof of immunizations are presented at the time of registration, and he/ she will not be allowed to participate in the visitation day unless the registration and screening processes have been completed.

Job Fair at Intermountain Community Center April 4

Tri County Community Network will be hosting their annual Intermountain Job and Resource Fair at the Intermountain Community Center on the senior side of the Intermountain Community Center in Burney on April 4 from 2-4 p.m.

Many local companies will be looking to hire new employees. There will also be representatives from the Military, Redding trade school, and Shasta College.

Meet the Candidates for Honorary Mayor of Burney April 1

On Saturday April 1 at 1 p.m., there will be a “Meet the Candidates” event at Bailey Park on Bailey Avenue in Burney. Each candidate for Honorary Mayor of Burney will have the opportunity to talk about the charity that they are raising money for and explain the motto and vision of their campaign.

The Honorary Mayor’s race is a fun and creative way to raise money for non-profit charities. Whoever raises the most money wins. Money raised will be divided between the candidates chosen charities and the Burney Chamber of Commerce.

The winner of the 2017 Honorary Mayor of Burney race will be announced at the Ice Cream Social June 29, ride in the Burney Basin Days parade, and be honored at the Burney Fireworks program on Saturday July 1. The mayor will also choose the winner of the “Mayor’s Choice Award” for the parade. During the year, the Honorary Mayor will have the opportunity to represent the town of Burney at public events in Burney and other towns.

So far six candidates have registered to run for the following charities:

  1. Anna Denny, for Burney Sober Grad Night
  2. Ralph Freitas, for Make-a-Wish (Shasta County)
  3. James Glaser,  for Boy Scout Troop 38
  4. Dana Hauge, for Burney 4-H
  5. Shaylene Herndon, for TriCounties Community Network, and
  6. Mary Frances Unterreiner, for St Vincent de Paul

If any other people would like to enter the Honorary Mayor’s race, they need to turn in their registration forms before or at the event on April 1. Candidate registration forms are available at the Burney Chamber of Commerce or at the Honorary Mayor of Burney Facebook Page.

If bad weather prevents the event from being held in the park, the event will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.

Burney Water District accepting lifeguard and water safety instructor applications

The Burney Water District (BWD) is now accepting applications for life guards and water safety instructors for the summer of 2017. Applicants must be 15 years of age. Applications are due by March 31.

The Burney Water District will be holding lifeguard and water safety instructor training in May.
