On Saturday April 1 at 1 p.m., there will be a “Meet the Candidates” event at Bailey Park on Bailey Avenue in Burney. Each candidate for Honorary Mayor of Burney will have the opportunity to talk about the charity that they are raising money for and explain the motto and vision of their campaign.
The Honorary Mayor’s race is a fun and creative way to raise money for non-profit charities. Whoever raises the most money wins. Money raised will be divided between the candidates chosen charities and the Burney Chamber of Commerce.
The winner of the 2017 Honorary Mayor of Burney race will be announced at the Ice Cream Social June 29, ride in the Burney Basin Days parade, and be honored at the Burney Fireworks program on Saturday July 1. The mayor will also choose the winner of the “Mayor’s Choice Award” for the parade. During the year, the Honorary Mayor will have the opportunity to represent the town of Burney at public events in Burney and other towns.
So far six candidates have registered to run for the following charities:
- Anna Denny, for Burney Sober Grad Night
- Ralph Freitas, for Make-a-Wish (Shasta County)
- James Glaser, for Boy Scout Troop 38
- Dana Hauge, for Burney 4-H
- Shaylene Herndon, for TriCounties Community Network, and
- Mary Frances Unterreiner, for St Vincent de Paul
If any other people would like to enter the Honorary Mayor’s race, they need to turn in their registration forms before or at the event on April 1. Candidate registration forms are available at the Burney Chamber of Commerce or at the Honorary Mayor of Burney Facebook Page.
If bad weather prevents the event from being held in the park, the event will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.
