Valerie Lakey presents at Stanford School of Medicine’s WELL for Life 2019 Annual Summit

Stanford University – Mayers Memorial Hospital District’s Director of Public Relations, Valerie Lakey was a presenter at the Stanford School of Medicine’s WELL for Life 2019 Annual Summit last week. Lakey was a part of the Community Partner Panel.

Stanford Presentation

MMHD has joined with Stanford’s WELL for Life program which is an innovative study at the Stanford Research Prevention Center designed to identify and modify factors that can lead to disease. WELL is meant to encourage people to be WELL for life and offer and opportunity to improve daily and long-term well-being.

As a Critical Access Hospital, Mayers is in a position to help Stanford with a specific demographic and identify needs of a rural community. Additionally, MMHD will receive reporting from the program to help identify local health care needs to improve local programs and services.

Lakey was asked to share about MMHD’s partnership with WELL, priorities of the rural community, benefits and challenges of participating in the program and give input on what would make the program more effective. The WELL program is interested in piloting a program with MMHD to establish best practices to expand the program into other Critical Access facilities.

The Summit was attended by the WELL Asia partners for Taiwan, Singapore and China. Lakey attended a dinner with the international partners and was able to share information and gain valuable insight and network connections.

For more information on the WELL program and to learn how it can benefit you and our community and help Stanford with valuable research, contact Val Lakey vlakey@mayersmemorial.com.

Hundreds of folks gathered at the 3rd Annual Hat Creek Beer, Food, and Wine Fest to enjoy good food and drink, music, and fun activities. Several people who attended from Redding and other areas said it was nice to get away from the heavy smoke due to wildfires.

The event began at Hereford Ranch RV Park and Campground at noon and lasted into the evening. Fun activities included ranch tours, a children’s AG fun park, face-painting, horseshoes, and corn hole toss. Visitors could fish or swim in the pond as they enjoyed the afternoon. There were also a number of local artisans set up to sell their wares.

Folks gather to enjoy country music performed by Jared Hovis

During the afternoon there was music on the pavilion performed by the Smokin’ Roaches, Alex Colvin, and Jared Hovis. In the evening California Country played on the playground stage, once again featuring Jared Hovis.

Food was provided by Anna’s Country Kitchen, JJ’s and Red Bicycle. Beer vendors included Fall River Brewery, Woody’s, Eel River Blonde, and FW 805. Dakaro, Churn Creek Cellars, Moseley Family Cellars, and Cove Crest provided wine.

Intermountain Preparedness Group holds interagency exercise to prepare for mass causality events

On Thursday April 26 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., about two dozen representatives from emergency response units, healthcare facilities, and support services met at the Burney Fire Hall to conduct a “Mass Casualty Table Top Exercise.”

Burney Fire District Chief Monte Keady facilitating the discussion

The meeting was a function of the Intermountain Preparedness Group that was formed to “attain shared preparedness and bring stability during crisis.” Agencies attending the meeting included CAL FIRE, Shasta County Fire Service, McArthur Fire Protection District, Burney Fire Protection District, Mayers Memorial Hospital District, Mountain Valley Health Centers, Pit River Health Service, Sierra Emergency Medical Services Alliance, Southern Cascades EMS District, Shasta County OEM, Shasta County Health and Human Services, and the American Red Cross,  .

The exercise was facilitated by Burney Fire Protection District Chief Monte Keady. Participants were organized into three groups according to their mission and function. The three groups were: 1) Fire, Hazmat, and Emergency Services; 2) Health Care Facilities; and 3) Support Services.

Chief Keady began the exercise by presenting a scenario of a mass causality event. The scenario involved a 40 vehicle fire on Hwy 299 in which 40 vehicles were involved. It included injuries and fatalities, a fire that began to spread, and a hazardous waste spill.

After briefing the audience on the situation, Keady asked each group to engage in a fifteen minute discussion about how they would respond to this emergency in the first 60-90 minutes.

Group discussions in progress

Afterward, a representative from each group presented a summary of their discussion. In their summaries they discussed how they would plan, organize and staff each of their operations, set up a command structure and communications, organize relief efforts and transportation, provide services, set up shelters, etc. After each presentation there was an opportunity for question and answer and open discussion.

Mayers Hosptial CEO Louis Ward reporting for the Health Services discussion group

The rest of the agenda had two more scenario updates followed by group, intergroup, and open discussions. The last scenario update involved the close of the incident. The final event of the exercise was “Lessons learned,” a thirty minute period of shared reflection during which participants could share “Aha moments.”

The meeting also included breaks during which participants could share refreshments and talk on a less formal basis.

For more information about the Intermountain Preparedness Group, citizens can contact any of the participating agencies.

The toys were donated as part of the Stuff the Ambulance Toy Drive sponsored by Meyers Memorial Hospital. Collection of toys, “stuffing the ambulance,” took place at seven locations throughout the Intermountain area. This is the third year that the program has been in place.

In addition to the toys from Stuff the Ambulance, F Troop has purchased more than $2000 worth of toys. The money for the toys was raised at F Troop’s annual yard sale held in Burney during the summer. Yard sale items are donated by people in the community for the project. All together the project gives out quality new toys to more than 125 children of families living in low income housing in the Intermountain Area. The club also buys new batteries for all the battery operated toys.

F Troop is the Burney affiliate of United Bikers of Northern California. They began giving out toys for kids 17 years ago when Tom Tindel was president of the club. The first year they gave out 30 Christmas stockings stuffed with toys and goodies in the Safeway parking lot. The program has grown every year since. Tom Miller succeeded Tindel as President and helped organize the program for three years.

Three years ago, under the leadership of President Greg Trotter, they began the summer yard sale so the community could be more involved. Each year, on a Saturday before Christmas, they give out the toys on a Christmas Toy Run led by Santa on a motorcycle. This year’s run will be Saturday December 16. Some of the bikers dress up as elves to help Santa deliver the toys.

Mayers Memorial Hospital District receives ACHD certification

Mayers Memorial Hospital District (MMHD) has met all of the criteria to be one of only 17 healthcare district’s in the state to be a Certified Healthcare District.

The Association of California Healthcare Districts (ACHD) Chief Executive Officer Ken Cohen presented MMHD with their certificate at the July 26 MMHD Board meeting.

Association of California Healthcare District CEO Ken Cohen, Valery Lakey and Louis Ward at the July 26th MMHD Board meeting.

California Healthcare Districts respond to the specialized health needs of California communities. Voters have created 79 Healthcare Districts to fill distinct gaps in local health care services – from wellness and prevention to emergency rooms and long-term care. 54 of these Districts serve the state’s rural areas. Mayers Memorial Hospital District became a district in 1969.

As Public Entities, Healthcare Districts have well defined obligations for conducting business in a manner that is open and transparent.  To assist members in demonstrating compliance with these obligations, the Governance Committee of the Association of California Healthcare Districts (ACHD) has developed a core set of standards referred to as Best Practices in Governance.  Healthcare Districts that demonstrate compliance with these practices receive the designation of ACHD Certified Healthcare District.

When notified in March that MMHD had achieved this designation, MMHD Chief Executive Officer Louis Ward said,

Earning the designation of a Certified Healthcare District by ACHD is an honor and a proactive step in maintaining the confidence of the people we serve. The certification assures our community that we are committed to the responsibilities we have as a District. We will always work with the best interest of the residents of the Intermountain area in mind; to provide essential quality care and access to health care in our rural setting.
